Community - Led Aquaculture Program

Neer Amaya, as mentioned earlier, also includes a Community-led Aquaculture Program that engages local fishermen in sustainable fish cultivation within designated water zones.

Rather than treating the backwaters only as a tourism landscape, our project recognizes the Kerala backwaters as a working eco-system that has supported the fishing communities for generations.

By integrating aquaculture into the project design, Neer Amaya aims to:

  • Provide stable income opportunities to local fishermen.
  • Preserve traditional knowledge of backwater fish farming and fishing practices.
  • Demonstrate responsible use of aquatic resources.
  • Strengthen long term community support for our tourism project.

This approach ensures that economic benefits extend beyond guests and investors to the local ecosystem of livelihoods.

Operational Concept for Aquaculture

  • Fish cages will be placed in designated water zones.
  • Aquaculture activities will be managed in partnership with local fishermen co-operatives.
  • We will be using native fish species suited to our brackish backwaters.
  • Scientific feed management procedures will be adopted to prevent water pollution.
  • There will also be regular monitoring of water quality.

Such a model allows aquaculture to operate without disrupting tourism activities or ecological balance.

Tourism Integration With Aquaculture

The Aquaculture Program also enriches the guest experience. Guests can observe and participate in elements of the fishing culture through:

  • Guided visits to fish cages
  • Traditional fishing demonstration
  • Farm -to-Table seafood dining
  • Educational tours on mangroves and backwater ecology.

These programs create a deeper connection between visitors and the living culture of Kerala's backwaters.
